saturday: pages 105 - 125

Pg. 106 paragraph 5 Quote 1 “He wandered around watching the soldiers looting, and joined in the drinking and destruction.” Answer to question 1 This quote relates to survivors guilt. Kien starts to drink and be destructive due to oanh death knowing he could’ve did something to prevent it from happening. Answer to question 3 The conflict is between kien and himself. Kien starts to beat himself up over knowing all he had to do was do his job and kill those women but he didn’t and ended up getting a friend killed instead. Quote 2 Pg. 111 paragraph 8 “She was tired, yet she did not try to free her hand from his” Answer to question 3 This quote indicates a good conflict between the mute girl and kien. Pg. 86 paragraph 2 Quote 1 “He lurched over to his desk and picked up his pen, then almost mechanically began to write” Answer to question 1 This quote is related to the writer theme. Kien has finally started to write down his feelings instead of letting them bother him and take over his mind. Answer to question 4 This quote shows that he was in a quiet area if he was able to concentrate on writing.  Quote 2 Pg. 90 paragraph 3 “To kien dead soldiers were more shadowy yet sometimes more significant than the living “ Answer to question 1 This quote relates to survivors guilt. He feels that the dead soldiers are more important than the living ones do to him being a surviving soldie he’s also talking about himself. Answer to question 5 This quote is related to survivors guilt. He feels as if dead souls are more important than him. People now still reminisce and wonder why were they able to accomplish something and not someone else or  feel bad for someone they did better than.

Thursday:64-85

Quote 1 Pg. 67 paragraph 2 “From that day on, kien avoided her. If their paths accidentally crossed, kien would bend his head and weakly mumble” Answer to question 1. This quote shows a theme related to wandering. Kien wasn’t being unloyal to anyone specific he felt as if he was being unloyal to himself. He felt as if the incident between him and hanh was inappropriate and not right. But he liked hanh so he was unsure and confused. Answer to question 3 The conflict this quote indicates is between kien and hanh. The conflict they have is about communication and letting their feelings affect what’s going on between them. Kien was shocked from what happened and quickly let his feelings get a hold of him. He didn’t know how to talk to hanh or what to say which made him extremely nervous wich is why he couldn’t look hanh in the face.
